Where the word abundance comes from

Abundance comes from the Latin abundare, to overflow, built on unda, a wave. The picture inside the word is water rising past the brim of whatever was meant to hold it.

That is why it reads as generosity rather than mere quantity. On a wall it makes the same claim a full table does: there is more here than we need, and you are welcome to it.
