Where the word awesome comes from
Awesome is built on awe, which in Old English was ege and meant dread rather than admiration. For centuries the awesome thing was the terrifying one, and the mild modern sense is American slang of the nineteen sixties and seventies.
The word has travelled from fear to enthusiasm without losing its size, which is why it still reads as a big statement on a small sign.
