Where the word benjamin comes from
Benjamin is the Hebrew Binyamin, son of the right hand, the name Jacob gave his youngest son in Genesis after his mother had chosen a sadder one. It has meant the favourite ever since.
The right hand was the side of strength and honour, so the name is a blessing as much as a label. Franklin carried it into American history.
