Where the word bonfire comes from
Bonfire began as the Middle English banefire, a bone fire, the festival blaze into which bones were thrown. The cheerful modern word has a gothic skeleton.
Fall porches and fire pits hang it for the gathering, not the etymology, which is probably wise.
