Where the word charlotte comes from

Charlotte is the French feminine of Charles, from the Germanic karl, a free man. It reached England with the queen of George III and reached America with the North Carolina city named after her.

E. B. White gave it to a spider in 1952 and to a generation of readers with her. A decade in the American top ten followed.
