Where the word evelyn comes from
Evelyn started as a surname, taken from the Norman personal name Aveline. It moved across to a first name in the nineteenth century and was given to both sexes for a long time after that.
The diarist John Evelyn and the novelist Evelyn Waugh both wore it. It returned to the American list around 2000 and now sits inside the top twenty-five of recent births.
