Where the word hex comes from
Hex is a nineteenth century American borrowing from Pennsylvania German hexe, to practise witchcraft. Behind it stands the German Hexe, a witch, and the Old High German hagazussa, which is also the ancestor of hag.
It came into English through farm country, which is why the hex signs on barns are the same word.
