Where the word learn comes from

Learn is the Old English leornian, and its root is a track or a furrow, the sense being to follow a path someone has already made. For centuries it also meant to teach, and both directions lived in the one word.

English later split the pair, but the older shape is the honest one for a classroom, where both things happen at once.
