Where the word mateo comes from
Mateo is the Spanish form of Matthew, from the Hebrew Mattityahu, gift of God, the name of the tax collector who became an apostle and an evangelist.
It rose up the American list on the strength of Spanish speaking families and stayed because it says easily in English too. The open ending does the work.
