Where the word mummy comes from
Mummy comes through medieval Latin from the Arabic mumiya, an embalmed body, which rests on the Persian mum, wax. For a while it named the substance rather than the body, and European apothecaries sold it as medicine.
The word describes the preservative, and the body inherited the name.
