Where the word oliver comes from
Oliver came into English from the Old French Olivier, the companion of Roland in the medieval epics. It was probably a Germanic name reshaped by the Latin oliva, the olive tree, and both stories are still told.
Cromwell put a chill on it in England for two centuries. Dickens thawed it, and it has held a top ten place in America since 2017.
