Where the word salty comes from
Salt is one of the steadiest words in the language, the Old English sealt, and it can be traced back nearly unchanged through most of Europe. Salary comes from it, because Roman soldiers were paid in part for salt.
The modern American sense of salty, meaning stung and showing it, is much younger and comes off the sea, where the language was saltier.
