Where the word slumber comes from
Slumber is the Old English sluma, a light sleep, with an ending that means to keep doing a thing. The b was never in the original and crept in later because English mouths found it easier, the same way it did in number.
A word with a silent addition made purely for comfort is well suited to the room it names.
