Where the word sophia comes from
Sophia is the Greek word for wisdom, personified in early Christian writing and built in stone in the great church of Constantinople. As a name it moved west through royal marriages into Germany and Britain.
It headed the American list for three years from 2011 and has stayed in the top ten since. Sofia, the Spanish and Italian spelling, is counted separately and is not far behind.
