Where the word tinsel comes from
Tinsel is the Old French estincelle, a spark, from the Latin scintilla. The word for December's cheapest decoration is literally the word for a spark, and scintillating is its cousin.
The etymology outshines the product, which is the joke a December shelf gets to make.
