Where the word welcome comes from
Welcome is the Old English wilcuma, a wished-for guest, built from will, meaning desire, and cuma, a comer. The word was originally a noun: you did not say welcome, you called someone one.
A thousand years later it still does exactly that on a porch, naming the guest rather than greeting them.
