About the sign
One character, cut from a single sheet of steel. The letter P is the whole sign: there is no backing plate and no border, so the shape on the wall is the character itself.
Five Art Nouveau typefaces to choose from, each measured against the steel at every size offered before it was drawn for sale.
About the Art Nouveau Letter P design
Most bowls on this P refuse to close the way a plain one would. In one face the bowl rolls inward and stops in a tight curl short of the stem, like a fiddlehead fern, and another tapers its bowl to a hairline that never quite arrives. A third drops the lower stroke in a long diagonal to meet the stem partway down, turning the counter into a sail. Stems flare, taper or lean, and only one face stands on rounded slab feet.
