Where the Acosta name comes from
Acosta is a Spanish and Portuguese surname that first described where a person lived. It usually marked someone who lived by the seashore, though some bearers took it from the mountain slopes, the encostas. One line runs back to the Portuguese da Costa, meaning "of the coast" and a cognate of the English word coast, which became de Acosta in Spanish. A word-for-word Spanish version of da Costa would be de la Costa. A second account traces the name to Catalan, where a means "at" and costa means "coast", giving a habitational surname that Spanish then borrowed.
In the Philippines the name arrived through the Catálogo alfabético de apellidos, and it is common today in Ilocos Sur, Metro Manila, Nueva Ecija and Cavite. The 2010 United States Census counted 103,418 people named Acosta, making it the 302nd most common surname in the country.
