Where the Austin name comes from
Austin is an English surname that began as a patronymic, formed from the given name Austin. That given name came into Middle English from Anglo-Norman Aostin, a popular variant of Old French Agustin. Agustin traces back to Latin Augustinus, built on Augustus, which literally meant majestic.
The short form arose as Late Latin turned into Old French and the g between two vowels regularly dropped away. The month shows the same change, with Latin August becoming Old French aoust and août in modern French. Austin and Augustine are doublets, two English forms of one Latin name. The surname later came back into use as a given name, with Austen and Austyn among its spellings.
