Where the Bailey name comes from
Bailey is most likely the Anglo-Norman bailli, the word behind bailiff, and behind that sits the Latin baiulus, a porter or a steward. Scotland still uses bailie for the same office. The name is first recorded in Northumberland, where it was said to have been changed from Balliol because the Scottish king John Balliol was so disliked, though there is no historical evidence for that and the earliest forms on record are Baillie and Bailli in the early 14th century. There is a second possibility with no job in it at all, a place in Normandy called Bailleul-en-Vimeu.
