Where the Bell name comes from
Bell comes out of the Middle English bell, and it most often marked a bell ringer or a bell maker. It also attached to people who lived beside an actual bell, a house sign or an inn sign, which is how John atte Belle was recorded in 1332. A second line runs through the medieval personal name Bel, whose masculine form comes from the Old French beu, bel, meaning handsome, and whose feminine form is a short form of Isobel. Patronymic records catch that line early, with Ailuuardus filius Belli in 1086, Ricardus filius Bell in 1279, and Osbertus filius Belle in 1297. The same Old French bel, beautiful or fair, also worked as a plain nickname, written for Hugo bel in 1148 and for Robert le bel between 1186 and 1200.
Other bearers took the name from places called Bell in Norway and Bell in the Rhineland, and possibly Belle in Westphalia, and in some families Bell is an Anglicized form of the German Böhl or Böll. The name is reckoned Scottish and northern English in origin. It now stands as the 36th most common surname in Scotland and the 67th most popular in the United States.
