Where the Bowman name comes from
Bowman is an English and Scottish surname that began as a job title. It joins the Middle English bowe, meaning bow, with -man, and first marked an archer, a hunter or a soldier armed with a bow. The name stays separate from Bowyer, which belonged to the person who made or sold bows.
In the United States, Bowman can also be an Americanized form of the German surname Baumann or its Dutch cognate Bouwman, both of a different etymology. The surname later came into use as a given name. The 2010 United States Census counted 105,007 people named Bowman, placing it 296th among the country's surnames.
