Where the Cook name comes from
Cook is a cook, and the word has barely shifted in a thousand years. It reaches English through the Middle English cook from the Old English coc, which was borrowed from the Latin cocus, and behind all of them sits the Proto-Indo-European root meaning to cook or to ripen. Koch in German and Kok in Dutch are the same word doing the same job in different mouths. Of all the trades that turned into surnames, this is one of the few a modern reader understands without being told.
