Where the Cooper name comes from
A cooper made and mended barrels, casks and vats, and in England that is exactly what the name says. It comes from the Middle English couper or cowper, and behind that the Middle Dutch kuper, from kup, a tub. Scotland reached the same spelling from somewhere else entirely, the town of Cupar in Fife. By the late 19th century Cooper was spread across England but sat thickest in three places: the northern midlands, Sussex and Hampshire, and Suffolk.
