Where the Cox name comes from
Cox has three plausible origins and no settled answer between them. One is the Old English cocc, meaning little, tacked onto a leader's name as an endearment, which is how Wilcox came to mean little William. Another is the Old English cock for a heap or a mound, which would make Cox a name for whoever lived beside the hill, in the same family as Haycock. The third is the Welsh coch, red, either for red hair or for the ruddy hills of Wales. An early record has Alicea Cox marrying at St Martin in the Fields in Westminster in 1556.
