Where the Day name comes from
Day is an English and Irish surname. One line of the name is a patronymic, taken from a medieval pet form of David. In England it could also be an occupational name for a day-servant, an old word for a day-laborer. Other English bearers took it from given names such as Dagr, Daug, Dege and Dey, which are cognate with the Scandinavian name Dag.
The Irish name comes from Ó Deághaidh, meaning descendant of a person named Good Luck, and it survives as both Day and O'Day. A Norman origin has also been suggested, from De Haie or from D'Ossone, after the town of Ossone in Normandy.
