Where the Dean name comes from
Dean is an English surname, and Deane is a variant spelling. Most often it is a habitational name from Middle English dene, meaning valley. A second English line comes from the title dean, a word that is a cognate of deacon. A third grew out of Deyne, a rhyming form of the personal name Reynald.
In Scotland the name points to Dean Castle in Kilmarnock, which took its own name from the word for valley. In Ireland, Dean is a variant of Deane.
