Where the Douglas name comes from
Douglas, sometimes spelt Douglass, is a Scottish surname thought to come from the Scottish Gaelic dubh glas, meaning "dark stream". It is a habitational name, which could come from any of the many places in Scotland called Douglas. In most cases it is thought to point to Douglas in South Lanarkshire, the site of Douglas Castle. That castle was the chief stronghold of the Lords of Douglas.
In southern Argyllshire the surname has a second origin, as an Anglicised form of MacLucas and MacLugash, from the Gaelic Mac Lùcais. The surname has developed into the given name Douglas. The Scottish Gaelic form of the given name is Dùbhghlas, and the Irish forms are Dúghlas and Dubhghlas.
