Harris Family Name Sign

About the Harris sign

One sign, three ways to read it: Harris, The Harrises, or Harris Family.

That extra -es is right, not a typo: Harris takes it in the family plural.

Harris on its own suits the circle and the square. Harris Family wants a rectangle or an oval.

Where the Harris name comes from

Harris is son of Harry, and Harry is what English mouths did with Henri, the name the Normans brought over in 1066. Henry became common enough to throw off a whole family of surnames, Harris and Harrison among them, along with Harries, Parry and Perry. In Ireland it arrived largely with the Plantation of Ulster, though in some families it is an anglicised O hEarchadha instead. There is a second Harris with no Harry in it at all, from the Isle of Harris, whose name may come from the Old Norse for an administrative district or simply for the higher ground.
