Where the Harvey name comes from
Harvey is an English and Scottish family name that grew out of the Old Breton personal name Huiarnviu. Its first element, hoiarn, meant "iron" and survives in modern Breton as houarn. The second element, viu, meant "blazing", so the name joined iron and fire. Haerviu was the name of a Breton saint. Old Welsh had a related name, Haarnbiu. Harvey became a surname when it was passed down from the given name, and in modern use the given name is often taken back from the surname.
Ireland gave Harvey a separate origin, as an anglicised form of the Gaelic names Ó hAirmheadhaigh and Ó hEarchaidh. Ó hAirmheadhaigh may share its root with Airmheadh, a physician in Irish myth.
