Where the Hernandez name comes from

Hernandez means son of Hernando, and Hernando is a variant of Fernando, which is the Spanish form of the Germanic Ferdinand. Ferdinand carries the sense of a bold or adventurous journey, which is more romantic than most surnames manage. The name became widespread around the 15th century, and Fernandez is its close cousin. Hernandes and Fernandes are the Portuguese equivalents of the pair.
