Where the Holland name comes from
Holland began as an English place name, carried by people from Holland, a division of Lincolnshire, or from any of eight villages of that name in various parts of England. In those English places, the name joins Old English hoh, meaning a ridge, with land.
A second line of the surname marked someone from the Netherlands, and it entered Middle English as a habitational name. That Holland, a historical province of the Netherlands, takes its name from Old Dutch holt lant, meaning wood land. A popular story derives it from hol land, or hollow land, because both the Dutch region and the English one lie low, but that etymology is false.
