Where the Howell name comes from
Howell is the anglicised form of the Welsh given name Hywel, which meant "eminent" or "prominent". It comes from the Old Welsh name Higuel, built from hy-, "good", and gwêl, "sight", so its literal sense is "well-seen". The earliest record of the name is in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which names Huwal of the West Welsh as a king in 926 AD. Many scholars take him to be Hywel Dda, "Howel the Good", the 10th-century Welsh king who gave his country its laws.
The surname grew from the name of an ancestor and meant "son of Hywel", which Welsh once wrote with the prefix ap, as in Owain ap Hywel. Huell and Powell are doublets of Howell, both descended from the same Welsh Hywel. In the 2010 United States Census, Howell ranked as the 272nd most common surname, carried by 112,041 people.
