Where the Hughes name comes from
Hughes is usually Welsh or Irish, and in Wales it comes from the personal name Hu or Huw, which means fire or inspiration. A second and unrelated source is the Picard form Hugh, from the Old French Hue and behind that the Germanic Hugo. The British census of 1881 found the name at its densest on Anglesey, where it ran at more than 37 times the national average, then across Gwynedd, Flintshire and Denbighshire. Before it is anything else, Hughes is a north Wales name.
