Where the Jenkins name comes from
Jenkins began as a patronymic, built from the given name John plus the diminutive -kin and an -s marking a son, so the whole thing reads as son of little John. The -kin element came out of Dutch or Danish -kijn, and it caught on in England. Behind the surname sits the medieval male name Jenkin, also written Jankin. Jenkin on its own meant little John, or son of John.
The surname is recorded as Cornish and as English, the English side mainly of Devon. It started in Cornwall and then became popular in southern Wales. About 220,830 people carry it in the United States, which puts it 114th there.
