Where the Jones name comes from

Jones is John with a genitive -s on the end, built on Jone, an old variant of the name. In Wales it is something else as well, an anglicisation of the patronymic ap Sion. The Laws in Wales Acts of the 16th century made English the language of official documents, so ap Sion, ap Dafydd and ap Gwilym had to be rewritten to be recorded at all, and Jones, Davies and Williams are what came out the other side. The surname is on record in England before any of that, with a Matilda Jones in 1273.
