Where the Kim name comes from

Kim is the most common surname in Korea, carried by more than a fifth of South Koreans. It is written 김 in Korean and with the hanja 金, a character that can also be read as geum and means gold, or metal, or iron.

The first document to record the name dates from 636 and refers to King Jinheung of Silla. The Kim family ruled Silla for 586 years, and dozens of separate clans, the bon-gwan, share the one surname between them. That clan system has no real equivalent outside Korea, so two Kims can carry the same name and no common ancestor.
