Where the King name comes from
King is English and goes back to the Old English cyning, the word for a tribal leader, from the Proto-Germanic kuningaz and behind that a root meaning kin. So the king inside the name is really the head of a family before he is the head of a country. The surname itself dates to the time of the Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain. It is also an anglicised German Kung or Konig, which in many German dialects is pronounced close enough to king that the swap needed no translating, and that line of the name is widespread among American Mennonites and Amish.
