Le is a common Vietnamese surname and also a romanization of several Chinese surnames. In Vietnam, Lê is the third most common surname, written with the character 黎. As a Chinese surname, Le is the Pinyin romanization of 樂, written 乐 in simplified characters, and the same name becomes Lok in Cantonese. Le can also stand for the Mandarin surname 勒, or serve as a variant romanization of 呂, a name also spelled Lu. The Vietnamese form Lê passed into French and Czech as a borrowed surname.
