Where the Li name comes from
Li is a Chinese surname, most often written 李, a character that also means plum or plum tree. Tradition traces it to Dali, a title held by Gao Yao, a legendary minister of the Xia dynasty, when the name was written with a different character, 理. The first historical person known to carry it was Li Er, claimed by some as Laozi, the founder of Daoism, and he is regarded as the surname's founding ancestor. Li stands fourth in the Hundred Family Surnames, and in 2018 it was the second most common surname in China, shared by 92.76 million people.
The name is often spelled Lee in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand, while Indonesia uses Lie and Macau also uses Lei. The same character became the Korean surname Lee and the Vietnamese surname Lý. In Korea it was written Ni until 1933, when the initial sound rule changed the spelling to I, and it now ranks second there behind Kim. Li can also come from two other Chinese surnames, 黎 and 理, which share the same English spelling.
