Where the Little name comes from
Little is an English surname that comes from the Middle English littel and the Old English lȳtel, both meaning "little". In some families it began as a nickname for a little man. In others it marked the younger of two people who shared the same personal name. Early records give the spelling Litle in 972 and again around 1095, then le Lytle in 1296.
The surname has also absorbed several names from other languages. It can stand in for the Irish Ó Beagáin, "descendant of Beagán", a name built on a diminutive of beag, meaning "small". Little has also served as a translation of the French Petit and Lepetit, and especially of the German Klein during World War II. Variant spellings include Littel, Littell, Lytle and Lyttle.
