Where the Lucas name comes from
Lucas came into English from the Latin Lucas, which itself came from the Ancient Greek Loukas. The name has also been traced to the Latin verb lucere, meaning "to shine". In Latin it was the name of Luke the Evangelist, traditionally held to be the author of the Gospel of Luke.
Lucas was first a given name, and as a surname it began as a patronymic, marking its bearer as the child of a father called Lucas. French carries Lucas as a patronymic surname too, alongside the shorter given name Luc. The same name runs through other European languages as Lukas in Danish, Dutch and German, and as Luca in Aromanian. Dutch also has a short form, Luuk, and English knows the same figure as Luke.
