Where the Lynch name comes from
Lynch grew from several unrelated roots, Gaelic and Anglo-Norman. The Gaelic line comes from Ó Loingsigh, descendant of Loingseach, a name meaning having a fleet of ships and built on long, ship. Several separate kindreds carried Ó Loingsigh in early medieval Ireland, among them lords of the kingdom of Dál Riata in north-eastern Ulster during the 11th century, until the Normans displaced them. Other Ó Loingsigh families lived in Clare, Leitrim, Limerick, Tipperary and West Cork. A related name, Mac Loingsigh, was anglicized as Clynch, Lynch and Mac Glinchy.
The second root is the Norman French de Lench, taken from Lench in Worcestershire and from the Old English hlinc, a hill. In Ireland de Lench became one of the Tribes of Galway, a wealthy landowning line later raised to the baronetage as the Lynch baronets of Galway. In England a Lynch family from Cranbrook in Kent, where William Lynch co-founded Cranbrook School in 1518, bore a coat of arms of three lynxes rampant.
