Where the Matthews name comes from

Matthews is an English surname that began as a patronymic, a name that marked a person by their father's given name. It is built from the given name Matthew with an -s added to the end. The same root gives two close relatives: Matthew, with no final -s, and Mathews, spelled with a single t. Every Matthews line traces back to a forebear who carried the forename Matthew.
