Where the McCoy name comes from
McCoy is an anglicised form of the Irish Mac Aodha, meaning "son of Aodh". Aodh was the name of a deity in Irish mythology and also an Irish word for "fire". The first to carry Mac Aodha were the grandsons of an Aodh who died in 1033, a son of RuaidhrĂ mac Coscraigh, King of South Connacht.
The McCoys of Ulster have a separate root: Scottish MacKays who arrived in the Ulster plantations in the 17th and 18th centuries and became McCoys. Related spellings include McCay, McCue, McHugh, McKie and McKoy. The 2010 United States Census ranked McCoy as the 278th most common surname in the country, carried by 110,744 people.
