Where the Morris name comes from
Morris is mostly English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh, and standing behind it is Maurice. Maurice came through French from the Latin Mauritius, meaning one from Mauretania, and it owes its spread to a saint of the Theban Legion who died in 287. The same name is Mauricio in Spanish, Maurizio in Italian, Moritz in German and Maris in Latvian. Morris also served as a secularised form of the Jewish name Moishe, so two families with no connection at all can share the plate on the door.
