Where the Morrison name comes from
Morrison has more than one origin, and the oldest strand is a patronymic meaning son of Maurice or Morris, a given name the Normans brought into England after 1066. A second strand is Irish, where Morrison is an anglicized form of Ó Muirgheasáin. In the Scottish Highlands, Clan Morrison traces its name to Mac Ghille Mhoire, meaning servants of Mary. The earliest recognisable record comes from the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379, which lists a Ricardus Morisson. About fifty years later, in 1429, an Arthuro Morison witnessed a deed of resignation in Scotland.
Scribes shaped the spelling as much as families did: George Morese, married in Aberdeen in 1584, appears in later records as George Moreson and then George Morrison. On the Isle of Lewis, families once known as McBrief, or mac a' Bhritheimh, took the name Morrison around 1640. Morison and Morisson were once common, and the double-r Morrison won out later.
