Where the Oliver name comes from
The surname Oliver grew out of the personal name Oliver. It came into English as Middle English Oliver, from Old French Olivier. The name was long tied to the Latin olivarius, meaning an olive tree planter or an olive branch bearer. A rival origin points north instead, to Old Norse Óleifr or to Proto-Germanic roots meaning all and true.
Oliver is one of Charlemagne's retainers in the 11th-century Song of Roland. The Normans brought the name to England, where it was in common use through the medieval period. In Scotland, an Oliver family formed a sept of Clan Fraser of Lovat in the Highlands.
