Where the Ortiz name comes from
Ortiz means son of Orti, and what Orti meant is genuinely disputed. One reading makes it Basque. Another takes it from the Latin fortis, brave or strong, and a third from the Latin fortunius, fortunate. The name also carries a piece of Spanish history, because officials of the Inquisition in Toledo wrote in the 1590s that Ortiz was in that city a converso lineage, a family name of Jews who had converted.
