Where the Padilla name comes from
Padilla is a surname of Spanish origin. It comes from a place, a municipality called Padilla de Abajo, and Spanish still uses the word as both a placename and a surname. The name travelled to the Philippines, where it settled in as a surname in Tagalog, Ilocano and Hiligaynon. English borrowed it straight from Spanish as well.
In the 2010 United States Census, Padilla ranked as the 293rd most common surname in the country, carried by 105,365 people.
